In Puffins we have been learning all about fractions. The children have been halving shapes and sharing quantities into two equal parts and discussing and using the term ‘half of’. We have also been looking at quarters. The children loved cutting up their favourite treats in quarters and sharing them equally.
In our English lessons, the children have been looking at the story ‘A new home for a Pirate’. We have been very busy putting the story into order and created our own story maps. We then used them to write our own version of the story.
Puffins have also been looking at poems and then spotting rhyming words throughout the text. The children then got to go on a rhyming word hunt around the classroom. We’ve had lots of fun naming different pirate characters and then using them to create a rhyming string. For example “Captain Waggle-Jack liked to eat a snack”.
During our history lesson this week the children wrote a ‘message in a bottle’ from themselves as Pirates.
Puffins have been introduced to their new science topic ‘An introduction to plants’. The children have already planted a sunflower seed so we discussed that process and then they labelled a diagram. We also took a little trip down to our forest to look at plants and trees. The children had a go at drawing some plants and adding labels.
During empathy day the children listened to a story about a little boy with one leg. We talked about how he was feeling throughout the story and what kind of things the children in the story could of done to show empathy. After we discussed with our talk partners what we thought empathy was and how we show it everyday at school.
Puffins loved their special dance lesson today taught by a visitor. We began by stretching and playing some games. The teacher then demonstrated some dance moves for us to copy which where then put together. The children enjoyed performing their ‘African dance’. Check out the video to see us in action!
In PSHE we focused on our emotions; particularly jealousy and pride. We watched a little clip on jealousy and then discussed with our talk partners moments when we felt these feelings. Here are a few comments about what makes us feel jealousy or pride:
Summer – “When I go to my friends house and see their toys that I like.”
Laken – “When my cousin gets sweets and I don’t.”
Lorise – “When we don’t win a football game.”
Alanna – “I feel jealous when it’s my sisters birthday.”
Archie – “I feel jealous when my brother goes to the cinema and I don’t.”
Ava – “I feel proud when I make things.”
Kaiden – “I feel proud of myself when I do something good in art club.”
Kane – “I feel proud when I get a gold card.”
Elena – “I feel proud when I help around the house and do things to help.”
Well done Puffins!
This summer term for our Design and Technology project we are cooking! To introduce this topic we had a message from a pirate telling us that his crewmates keep getting sick because they won’t eat their vegetables. He asked for our help to sneak fruit or vegetables into their tummies. Puffins came up with some great ideas such as fruit cake or different flavoured pies. We settled on ‘carrot cake’. The children then researched the existing product by tasting some yummy carrot cakes and looking on the IBW at recipes. The children wrote up the ingredients that they would need and what they could add to it to make it healthier. We looked at the method and what tools we would need to make our cakes. We then got to try a variety of carrot cakes and discussed whether we liked the taste or not.
