Measuring in Maths

In Maths this week we have been measuring things using non-standard measures. We chose to use cubes to investigate how tall our toy dinosaurs and other creatures were. Once we had measured them we made a note of how many cubes tall they were and put them in order. Which toy do you think was the tallest?

Marvellous Materials

This week we finished off our Science topic about Materials. First of all we looked at ways to change the shape of a material and found we could fold, roll, squash, pull, crush, bend, curl, and squidge our materials to make them into different shapes!

We also thought about how we could group different materials. We began by sorting them according to what they were made from, then we moved on to grouping them by their properties- shiny and dull, smooth and rough, hard and soft etc.

Our new Science topic will be Sound and Hearing.

Terrific Trip to Space!

Yesterday Year 1 enjoyed an exciting day at the Think Tank as part of their Space topic.  We took a coach into town and were all very excited!

Our first appointment of the day was at the planetarium where we saw thousands of stars all over the ceiling and learnt about where some planets and constellations are.

After that we enjoyed some time looking around the Kids City area of the Think Tank and exploring all the different activities they had to offer.

Next we had lunch before going into the Science Garden. In the Science Garden there was so much to do, including a giant hamster wheel and an activity where we could make rockets spray unsuspecting passersby with water!!

We had a fantastic day and discovered lots about the world around us 🙂
